Our Beginnings

In 1994, five founding families, at the initiative of Laurel and George Tahija, set out to establish a model Indonesian school. By December 1995, the five families had set up a non-denominational, not-for-profit vehicle now called “Perkumpulan Mandiri” or the Mandiri Association to establish, finance and manage educational endeavours. One of Perkumpulan Mandiri’s major commitments has been to the Sekolah Perkumpulan Mandiri (SPM) School that began with a Kindergarten and Grade 1 in July 1996/1997 with a total student body of 25.

Becoming a Lighthouse School

Sekolah Perkumpulan Mandiri (SPM) School has grown to offer classes from Kindergarten, Elementary to Junior and Senior High school grades.A unique characteristic of Sekolah Perkumpulan Mandiri (SPM) is its Student-Centered and Inquiry-Based approach and a balance between character development and academic achievement through The Leader in Me program.

In April 2012, Sekolah Perkumpulan Mandiri (SPM) was recognised as The 1st International Lighthouse School, a model and parameter school that implemented the Leader in Me Program outside of America. This recognition is based on the accreditation from the FranklinCovey, USA.

Unleashing Potential

The school uses the National and Cambridge Curricula while ensuring a learning approach allowing students to develop as; inquirers, thinkers, communicators, risk-takers, knowledgeable, principle-centered, caring, open-minded, well-balanced and reflective.

On May 30th, 2015, PSKD Mandiri transformed into Sekolah Perkumpulan Mandiri (SPM). The ceremonial name change and the launch of a new SPM logo attended by our students, Parents, Teachers, and Perkumpulan Mandiri was represented by Laurel and George Tahija along with Edwin and Julie Soeryadjaya.

SPM’s vision is to be a principle-centered school that develops academic excellence and lifelong learning skills in an engaged community.

SPM educators, using effective teaching and learning strategies that blend the National and Cambridge International curricula, maximise opportunities for students to actualize their potential and become lifelong learners in a safe and inspiring environment.
