The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People & The Leader in Me

As the first International Lighthouse School outside of America and Canada licensed to implement the Leader In Me Program, Sekolah Perkumpulan Mandiri adopts the 7 Habits by Stephen R. Covey. This program caters to students from Kindergarten to Senior High School. The program teaches 21st Century leadership and life skills which are:

  • Leadership
  • Responsibility
  • Accountability
  • Problem Solving
  • Adaptability
  • Communication
  • Initiative and Self-Direction
  • Creativity
  • Cross-Cultural Skills
  • Teamwork

The Leader in Me is also aligned to many national and state academic standards. The process teaches students the skills needed for academic success in any setting. These skills include critical thinking, goal setting, listening and speaking, self-directed learning, presentation-making and the ability to work in groups.

The Leader in Me is aligned with best-in-class content and concepts practised by global education thought leaders. It provides a logical, sequential and balanced process to help schools proactively design the culture that reflects their vision of the ideal school.

Student Lead Conferences

Let's be honest collecting report cards and seeing a list of scores really does not tell us about the passions and development of our children, it is important but it does not put our children at the centre. This is why we have Student Led Conferences, on this day your child will present to you and their teachers what their objectives are what they have done to achieve these objectives, show the evidence, and stand accountable for their targets reached and missed. This is discipline, this places learning firmly into a students hands. Moreover, this is fantastic practice for the real world, both in further studies and in their career.

Assembly Leaders

Assembly is a traditional school practice, however, we add an exciting twist. Every Monday each class will have the chance to be assembly leaders. The class in charge will have the following tasks: lead classes into the assembly, be the MC for assembly, present their message to their peers both older and younger.

Class Code of Cooperation

Learning how to interact and work with others is a soft skill that can never be taught too young. Each class at the start of the school year creates a code of cooperation, an ethos that they will live and work by which promotes effective and efficient learning. If students have issues then we return to their code of cooperation and find the win-win. Having this shared expectation that is designed and implemented from the student's themselves allows them to form, create norms and storm forward.

Leadership Day

This is our annual whole school celebration and open house where students lead the school in all aspects. Students are the MC, tour guides, do performances, open up booths to sell or/and display their work and achievements. This celebration is to show that everyone is a leader in their own right.

Leadership day gives opportunities to our students to showcase their work and leadership skills. During this event, students perform their daily implementation and achievements of the 7 Habits. They also share valuable real-life experiences such as Woodleigh student exchange program, Model United Nation, and Need for Dash. Students showcase their leadership day in a student & parent workshop and school tours for the guests. Learn more

Lighthouse Team

The Student Lighthouse Team consists of Students from all high school grades who are involved in the planning of leadership events and take part in the leadership opportunities throughout the school year. They also empower the 7 Habits values in the school environment. Students have to go through an interview process to be selected for the lighthouse team. Once the team has been formed the students then vote for who will hold the positions within the team.

Leadership Roles

How do you add value to your school? Everyone can! Students select how they want to help in their classes and the throughout the school, roles range from President of the Lighthouse Team, Event Coordinator to a member of the Creative Minds team. Therefore, there are no shortages of opportunities for all to add value and grow.
