We at SPM have seen our school community accomplish great things. A significant contribution the team made to the learning process was to introduce and implement The Leader in Me program from Kindergarten to Senior High School. We have taught our students the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and tied these habits to teaching-learning activities. Our very supportive parents further encouraged these habits on the home front, bringing the habits to life. In April 2012 SPM became the 1st International Lighthouse School and we opened our doors to share with educators from Indonesia and around the world. Our school and activities were highlighted a number of times in the recently published book "The Leader in Me 2nd Edition: How Schools Around the World are Inspiring Greatness, One Child at a Time" (Simon and Schuster, August 2014), written by New York Times bestselling authors Stephen R. Covey, Sean Covey, Muriel Summers and David K. Hatch.

After successfully addressing how to develop our students' leadership we went on to identify how to add rigour and international standards to the academic curriculum. Discussions that began in 2012 with parents, teachers and principals led to our Cambridge licensing in early 2014! A blended Indonesian national and Cambridge curriculum will be implemented starting the 2015/2016 School Year.

Teachers are our first point of contact for students and professional development has, and will continue to be, an important focus for SPM. Beginning with the 2014/2015 School Year, teachers are entitled to 80 hours of professional development, doubling previous years' averages of 40-50 hours per school year.

International research has identified strong professional training is often an element in efforts that improved student outcomes. Data from 25 of the world's school systems, including 10 of the top performers suggest that regardless of culture or context, three things matter most: (1) getting the right people to become teachers, (2) developing them into effective instructors, and (3) ensuring the system can deliver the best possible instruction for every child (McKinsey On Society, "How the World's Best Performing Schools Come Out on Top").

Professional development programs for our SPM teachers will be very focused and directed to improve student outcomes. Turning a school from "good to great" also requires raising the calibre of existing teachers and principals through coaching (McKinsey, "How the World's Most Improved School Systems Keep Getting Better", 2010) and developing a learning community within the school. Experienced educator Wendy Armunando was hired in September 2014 as the school's Executive Principal and will work closely with school leaders through role modelling, coaching and individual feedback sessions all of which have been identified as more effective for professionals than conventional classroom-based training.

Lifelong learning and continuous improvement are not just words we put up on the walls of our schools – as individuals we believe in them. As educators we want to instil these values in our students so that they develop the mindset, attitude, behaviour and skills to be effective and successful in changing and challenging situations on their journey to pursue their dreams.
